NBSE Established by Act
The Nagaland Board of School Education was constituted through an Act of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. The Governor granted assent on 15th November 1973.
Operations Begin
Board Begins Functioning
The NBSE formally commenced operations on 1st October 1974, marking the start of an independent educational governance body for Nagaland
First Examination
Inaugural HSLC Examination
In March 1975, the Board held its first High School Leaving Certificate Examination across 6 centres for 2,008 candidates.
Curriculum Identity
State Curriculum Committee Convenes
Following workshops, seminars, and study tours, the state-level curriculum committee held its inaugural meeting on 30th March 1978, launching efforts toward an independent Naga curriculum.
New Curriculum
State-Specific Curriculum Approved
The new curriculum, tailored to the needs of Nagaland, was approved by the Government on 12th April 1979. Aligned textbooks were rolled out for Class 9 (1981) and Class 10 (1982).
Evaluation Reform
Centralised Coded Answer Books
A significant reform in the HSLC examination process — centrally coded answer books were introduced for centralised evaluation, strengthening fairness and consistency.
Examination Policy
Supplementary Exams Abolished
The system of conducting supplementary examinations mid-year and immediately after the main examination was discontinued from 1987.
Major Reform
Semesterisation of HSLC Course
The HSLC course was semesterised and bifurcated into the Class 9 Promotion Examination and the HSLC Examination. The first Class 9 exam was held at all recognised schools. Classes 8 and 9 were decentralised — Board sets papers, schools evaluate.
Legislative Empowerment
NBSE Amendment Act — Three Streams
The NBSE (Amendment) Act 1990 empowered the Board to conduct the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination across Science, Arts, and Commerce streams.
Student Records
Registration Numbers Allotted
Students of the 1994 batch from Classes 8 and 9 were allotted individual registration numbers upon successful completion of their examinations.
Traceability
Pass Certificates with Registration Numbers
The 1995 batch of Classes 8 and 9 became the first to receive pass certificates bearing registration numbers, enabling the Board to maintain comprehensive track records of every student.
